According to village officials, an average Orland Park family that uses about 9,000 gallons of water a month can expect to pay an extra $64.26 a year.Customers who use between 9,000 and 18,000 gallons a month would be billed at $5.62 per 1,000 gallons, an increase of about 62 cents. Customers who use more than 18,000 gallons a month would be billed at $6.59 per 1,000 gallons, an increase of about 65 cents. Rates also would increase for unincorporated residences that purchase water from Orland Park and would be effective as of Jan. 1."While it's never a pleasant thing to have to pass on a rate increase, our rates are still very competitive, compared to some of our neighbors," said Village Manager Paul Grimes.Officials emphasized that the majority of the increase is to cover higher costs charged by the City of Chicago and Oak Lawn. Chicago sells water to Oak Lawn, which sells water to Orland Park.A village memo attributes about 5 cents of the increase to Orland Park for the cost of maintenance and operations of its local system, about 17 cents to Oak Lawn and about 38 cents to the City of Chicago.Finance Director Annmarie Mampe said the Chicago rate went up 25 percent in 2012 and will climb 15 percent every year from 2013 to 2015 to pay for needed improvements to its aging water system infrastructure. The increase from Chicago last year was mostly responsible for bumping the average Orland Park resident's water rate by about 42 cents or 11 percent, Mampe said."I want to make sure residents know this is going to go on for a while as Chicago continues to take up its rates," said Trustee James Dodge. "We're still at the mercy of the City of Chicago taking these rates up aggressively."Oak Lawn also has negotiated an increased rate for 2013 to pay for operations and maintenance of its system, a cost that hasn't risen since 1998, Mampe said.Grimes said Orland Park has explored alternative water supply options, but despite the rate increases from Chicago and Oak Lawn, the current system is still the best option.
